As-salam alaykum
I went to Dubai for about five weeks to work at Landor, a branding company.
It was an awesome experience, and probably the best time to go (November to December) as it is not as hot as it could be, but it’s still pretty dry.
If you like shopping, there’s a lot to see in Dubai, and the Old, Gold and Spice Souqs are very interesting to visit.
Weekends are Friday-Saturday, though I am told in some gulf countries it is Thurs-Fri, so when dealing with suppliers and companies from the UK and aborad it can be a bit frustrating as they don’t have the same working days as us!
Most of my weekends were spent exploring, and I wanted to travel elsewhere in the middle east but for one reason or another wasn’t able to.
Dubai is an amazing city, but it’s appeal quickly fades especially when you’re alone.
That said, if you ever have a chance to come here, I’d encourage you to. There is so much to do here if you are on a short stop over, especially if shopping and gold is your thing, and there is so much opportunity with regard to work – this place is growing big time!
Also, throw away any misconceptions you have about the middle east – with in reason, Dubai is very pro-western, and there are plenty of places where you can drink, and ‘express yourself’.
That said, if you are not muslim, don’t come here during Ramadan – it’s very restrictive – you can’t eat/drink in public during daylight, and you have to dress ‘respectably’.
